Bandsaw Maintenance

Being able to afford to purchase the larger woodworking tools, such as a bandsaw, is great. However, once you own one you need to not only know how to use the bandsaw, but you also need to know how to maintain it.

With that in mind, here are a few tips and maintenance tasks that you can perform on your bandsaw to ensure that it stays accurate.

Release the Tension on the Blade

It's a good idea to release the tension of the bandsaw blade from the tire at the end of the day, or especially when you know you will not be using the bandsaw for a while.

Leaving the tension on the blade for long periods of time will eventually cause a permanent ridge in the tire itself. Put a note on the bandsaw to help remind yourself to release the blade when you will not be using it for a while.

 Keep the Bandsaw Tire Clean

Dirty bandsaw wheels and tires full of sawdust will cause the blade to vibrate.

If your bandsaw does not have a self cleaning brush to keep the tires clean, you can install one yourself by mounting a stiff bristle brush to lightly touch the tire. Mount the brush by screwing a metal angle to the wooden handle of a handheld brush and to the inside of the wheel cover.
